Rapid Assessments of Capacities of Hand Pump Manufacturers in Zimbabwe
Description:
Government of Zimbabwe standardised in 1989 Bush hand Pump "B" type following years of rigorous trials and modifications. This Hand pump “B” type is now in “Public Domain”. More than 50,000 of these hand pumps are installed mostly in rural areas of Zimbabwe. Rough estimates are that about 40% of them are not functioning.
Repairing these pumps by replacing worn out part is not possible because of interchangeability and pumps manufactured with non standard specifications. One is forced to change the whole pump head unit or the cylinder assembly. UNICEF and other partners are facing challenges in the last few years to procure
hand pumps from lowest bidders that meet the national standard and specifications.
