Survey of Water Quality from Shallow Tubewells in Lahan Municipality, Nepal

Description:

The 2021 census showed that 70% of the population in Lahan Municipality in Siraha District in Madhesh Province, Nepal, are using shallow tubewells/ handpumps as their primary source of drinking water; however, very little data is available on the quality of water from these wells. WaterAid Nepal, through the Beacon Project (a long-term partnership between Anglian Water and its Alliances, WaterAid Nepal, Nepal Water Supply Corporation, and the local government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Supply), therefore decided to conduct a detailed household survey to collect water quality data from a sample of shallow tubewells across the Municipality, in order to 1) Identify key contaminants and quantify the public health risk; 2) Provide a comparison between the quality of water from shallow tubewells and piped water supply; and understand customer preferences for choosing whether or not to connect to a piped water supply; 3) Inform the design of hygiene behaviour change interventions to improve access to safe water; and 4) Inform the Municipality’s WASH planning.
