A paper presented on behalf of the UNDP/World Bakn INT 81/026 Handpumps Project at the National Conference on Handpump Based Water Supply in Oruro, Bolivia.

Most handpump designs are not protected by any patents and if a design proves to be successful in a country it is very likely that more than one manufacturer will be interested to produce the pump. The buying agencies often are also very interested that more than one supplier is producing the handpumps because only open competitive tendering guarantees realistic prices.
