Description:

Public investments in rural water supply extend first to the most accessible communities. Self supply—the development or improvement of water supplies by households largely or wholly at their own cost—is an approach that can help increase coverage in areas where it is not feasible or cost-effective to develop communal supplies. It can also supplement existing services—improving water quality, quantity, reliability, or access. Rainwater harvesting, construction and upgrading of shallow wells, and household water treatment all lend themselves to household investment.
