The Canzee Pump: Pump evaluation and its potential of local manufacture.
A Madagascar Field Study

Description:

Richard Cansdale of SWS Filtration Limited based in UK is the promoter of the Canzee handpump. This Village Level Operation and Management of Maintenance (VLOMM) pump is specially designed to be easy to operate and maintain at the community level.

So far, 11 Canzees have been installed in the rural and isolated commune of Manantenina, Madagascar, by the Swiss NGO Medair. This study is the first to evaluate the Canzees in field conditions and identify the potential for cost-effective in-country manufacture. The evaluation found that 100% of the Canzee pumps, after 16 months of the first being installed, were working perfectly well. While no breakdown was noticed, the technical improvement evaluation is rich in new insights regarding design modifications.

Whereas the pumps are functioning well technically, the same cannot be said for the pump management which is headed by Water Committees (WC). The research revealed some fundamental weaknesses such as the lack of adequate technical training and absence of on-going and appropriate support to the communities by the NGO that installed the pumps. In addition, an absence of a spare parts supply chain, the lack of a water collection fee system for revenue generation are all factors that could jeopardise the sustainability of the Canzees in Madagascar.

However, the issues noted are not so dire that they cannot be corrected. Recommendations for addressing these problems are noted. And, the study has shown that the Canzee has the potential of being partially manufactured in Madagascar, therefore a reliable spare parts supply chain is feasible.
