Stop the Rot Diagnostic Survey 2024 – Results and Next Steps
Description:
Boreholes and pumps can perform poorly and even fail for a variety of reasons. As part of the Stop the Rot initiative, the British Geological Survey (BGS), BASEflow and Ask for Water Ltd are developing a systematic and practical guide that can support practitioners to diagnose why systems have failed or are not working properly, with a focus on aspects that relate to handpumps, boreholes and groundwater.
In order to learn from organisations that are implementing, or funding projects which: (i) drill and rehabilitate boreholes, and/or (ii) install, rehabilitate or maintain water supply systems that rely on handpumps or solar pumps, an online survey was run in late 2024. The survey also set out to understand what stakeholders would require in terms of guidance materials and find out who would like to be involved in supporting their development. The results from the 111 people who responded are provided in this report.
