There are between 0.5 and 1.3 million handpumps in use in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the most likely number about 0.7 million

CORROSION HAS BEEN KNOWN ABOUT FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND YET SIMPLE MISTAKES ARE REPEATED AGAIN AND AGAIN
- Galvanised Iron (GI) pumps and riser pipes continue to be installed in unsuitably aggressive groundwater.
- Pump and pipe materials (including GI, brass, stainless steel) are not always meeting quality standards and are not being checked routinely.
- Pump manufacturers and installers are not always incentivised to deliver good quality.

The causes of corrosion and pump failure are complex, but there are actions that can be taken.
