The Implementation of Handpump Schemes for Rural Water Supplies in Africa

Description:

A synthesis of completed and current handpump schemes is given for much of Africa and the key issues of project implementation are discussed. A major aspect of handpump programmes as yet largely unresolved is the organisation and funding of the maintenance and the proposals of many countries are summarised. Conclusions are drawn from a summary of country data on handpum pschemes and serval recommendations are made. The completion of the construction phase markets the beginning not the end of the rural water supply project. The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the World Bank.
