Bangladesh Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Human Capital Development Project Project Information Document (PID)
Description:
The BD Rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Human Capital Development Project in Bangladesh aims to improve access to safely managed water supply and sanitation in selected rural areas and strengthen sectoral institutional capacity. The project, with a total cost of $543.50 million, includes components such as investments in water supply (large and small piped water schemes, household water improvement loans), investments in sanitation and hygiene (public and household facilities, market development, innovation, behavior change campaigns), institutional strengthening (policies, capacity building), project implementation and management, and COVID-19 emergency response. It targets improved WASH facilities for millions and addresses environmental and social impacts, gender inequalities, and climate resilience.
Key points on rural water supply emphasize community engagement for sustainability, robust capacity building at local and institutional levels, and effective monitoring and evaluation systems. Financial sustainability is crucial, requiring innovative funding models like tariffs and private sector involvement. Addressing gender imbalances and integrating gender-sensitive approaches enhance outcomes. Selecting appropriate technologies and fostering local ownership and participation are essential for long-term success. Finally, ensuring equity in access, maintaining financial transparency, and incorporating climate resilience into planning are critical for sustainable rural water supply services.
